FAILURE - A DIFFERENT ROUTE TO SUCCESS

Let's talk - Failure Here are 4 examples that come to my mind of people who resurrected themselves out of failure - Remember the guy who was slapped by people on a railway station for picking Sunil Dutt's wallet in Munnabhai MBBS? That was Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Nawaz graduated from NSD and was forced to work as a cook and a security guard because he had no work and no money. How many of you are willing to do that as a part of your struggle to succeed? Did he feel depressed about it then? So what did he do? And where is he today? Nawaaz kept trying. Trying hard. Finally a casting director suggested his name to Sujoy Ghosh, who was directing Kahaani. Sujoy himself was battling 2 flops while making Kahaani. He offered Nawaz an important role of an IB official. Nawaaz got a small opportunity to make it big in Bollywood. After years of failure, he precisely knew what that small opening could do for his career. And boy did he deliver? For his role in Kahaani, Nawaaz walked away...

Stay Focussed

I woke up this morning with a big smile on my face. I know everything will work out. In fact, everything already has worked out. I look out the window, and it’s a beautiful sunny day. I see trees everywhere. There is no wind, just stillness and quiet. I’ve survived. I’ve made it through the darkest period of my life. Like a train going through a tunnel, I’ve come out the other side. My lights are shining bright. It feels great to be alive. How did I make it through the abyss? How does anyone make it through the abyss? You have to dig deep. You have to forgive. You have to make the decision to let the past go and be happy. This is where your philosophy of life comes in. Here are twenty one nuggets that have helped me navigate life. I hope they serve you well too: A. Don’t worry about money; worry about the opportunity and money will follow. This is my favorite piece of advice my Dad ever gave me. It’s such a great way to look at your career c...

WHAT MEDITATION REALLY IS ??

The various types of meditation now prevalent all over the world may be divided into two broad groups: secular and religious. To the former group belong all forms of concentration practised for the sake of health. It has been scientifically proven that certain types of meditation relax the body, reduce blood pressure and mental tension, and cure psychosomatic disorders. They have thus become a boon to a large number of people living under conditions of stress, especially in the West. There is nothing wrong in practising meditation for its therapeutic effects, but one should not think this is all that meditation means or can do. Here we are concerned only with the other group of meditations, called upasana in Vedantic literature, which aim at spiritual illumination. This again is of two types: anthropomorphic (sakara) and non-anthropomorphic (nirakara). In the first type, followed in the path of devotion (bhakti), meditation is done on a form of the deity known as the aspirant’s C...

CONCENTRATION - A GIFT OF VEDANTA

The power of concentration can be developed through constant practice. The most important requisite for increasing concentration is purity of mind. It may be expressed in the form of a mathematical formula: concentration of mind (C) is directly proportional to Purity of mind (P). Purity of mind comes from following Yama and Niyama, a set of two basic disciplines mentioned in the Yoga Sutras. * Yama means control. It consists of five disciplines: (a) Satya (truthfulness): One should be honest in all dealings and actions. (b) Ahimsa (non-violence): Non-injury of any living creature. (c) Asteya (non-stealing): One should not steal or grab what rightfully belongs to others. (d) Aparigraha (non-acceptance of gifts): Non-possession or non-covetousness means not to expect anything from any body. (e) Brahmacharya (continence): Extolling the practice of chastity, Swami Vivekananda said, “Complete continence gives great intellectual and spiritual power”. Brahamacharya also means ...

Secrets To Effective Studying & Learning

"Current performance, which is something we can observe, is an unreliable index of learning" Dr. R. Bjork Inaccurate Intuitions Professor Robert Bjork (UCLA) is  a leading authority on the subject of learning. Dr. Bjork feels that learners should get rid of the inaccurate intuitions  surrounding common learning practices (for example: fast learning leads to long-term retention of information). Alternatively, learners should start relying on proven learning strategies.  Desirable Difficulties When we feel uncomfortable during the learning process (undesirable difficulties)...it in fact is a necessary condition for effective learning (a desirable difficulty). For effective learning to occur, the most important goal is to create conditions that foster storage and enhance later retrieval (not just at a delay, but also in multiple contexts). Therefore, to effectively learn, we need to create durable and flexible access to to-be-learned information and procedures....

Learn to enjoy studying :)

Remember to study for knowledge and not study for getting good grades! This helped me a lot, and so might help you too… Tips : 1)Learn the importance and value of education : As a student, you should understand that studying is a path to what lies ahead in your life.  Studying is a path to attain all your dreams. Usually, students who have learnt to value education, tend to enjoy studying, as well. 2)Keep your study area organized and comfortable : This helps you to concentrate better while studying by reducing unwanted distractions. TRY TO LIVE YOUR GOALS IN POLAROIDS

Try something different: stop thinking about the big picture, and start thinking in Polaroids. What is thinking about the big picture? The big picture is what we tell ourselves we must do in life: we must graduate from college with a stellar GPA, we must accept a job offer at a stable company with excellent benefits, we must also buy a new car, several years down the road we really must get a promotion, or exchange the car for a more expensive one to match the promotion, or move to a more upscale neighborhood, etc. A big picture is usually vague, abstract, full of grandiose ideas we want to share with others, and can often fill us with anxiety and overwhelm. What is thinking in Polaroids? A Polaroid is a step towards a real goal: it is concrete, it has a beginning and an end, it helps us focus because it is finite - and what's best about it, it is doable. A Polaroid is part of a carefully thought out plan. A Polaroid takes a strategic snapshot of your life so that you are...

BETTER AUDITORY MEMORY WITH MAGNETS

Improving memory with magnets The ability to remember sounds, and manipulate them in our minds, is incredibly important to our daily lives—without it we would not be able to understand a sentence, or do simple arithmetic. New research is shedding light on how sound memory works in the brain, and is even demonstrating a means to improve it. Scientists previously knew that a neural network of the brain called the dorsal stream was responsible for aspects of auditory memory. Inside the dorsal stream were rhythmic electrical pulses called theta waves, yet the role of these waves in auditory memory were until recently a complete mystery. To learn precisely the relationship between theta waves and auditory memory, and to see how memory could be boosted, researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University gave seventeen individuals auditory memory tasks that required them to recognize a pattern of tones when it was reversed. Listeners performed this task while being recor...

TIME BANK OF LIFE

Imagine there is a bank account that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course? Each of us has such a bank. It's name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to a good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no over draft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no drawing against "tomorrow." You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success! The clock is running!! Make the most of today. To realise the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade. To realise the value of ONE MO...
